With the intention of resurrecting the energy of classic hardcore, ex-88 Fingers Louie bassist Joe Principe formed Rise Against in Chicago in 1999.
Powered by the impressive vocals of Tim McIlrath, the band plays modern retro hardcore that is closer to Bad Religion than Black Flag. But that's OK since they deliver plenty of punch; and while the messages are positive, they stick close enough to the sonic brutality of their progenitors to ensure that punk is still not dead. Since forming in 1999, the band has released four records and a handful of singles, played Black Flag in the skateboarding epic Lords of Dogtown and became one of the shining stars on Fat Wreck Chords' artist roster.

Among pop-punk/emo/metal bands, A Day to Remember's effectively schizoid approach to meshing all three musical styles is among the genre's most extreme. The five-piece band rarely goes more than two minutes in any song, no matter how melodically sweet or exuberantly sprite, before banking into a metallic chug replete with grunting death vocals and screams. Based in Ocala, Fla., the group formed in 2003 and signed to Victory Records. Since then, they've released And Their Name Was Treason (2005), For Those Who Have Heart (2007) and Homesick (2009), an album that garnered them critical acclaim and a spot as high as No. 21 on the Billboard 200 chart.

One of the only skinhead acts to make it big in the states, the Boston-based Dropkick Murphys revitalized an increasingly jaded Punk scene by re-introducing the aggression of "Oi!" Recognizable by its football scrimmage grunting and Ubermensch machismo, "Oi!" holds a strong appeal for young, working class ruffians who like to shrug off the day's labors with a little male bonding and a lot of beer. Melding down-tuned metal heaviness and zippy Ska melodies, the Dropkick Murphys utilize tough, street punk sensibilities to counter Punk's watering-down via the influx of tepid radio pop.

AFI top the short list of modern-day hardcore saviors. After starting out in the early '90s as another bouncy, Northern California pop-punk band, they released Black Sails in the Sunset in 1999, their fourth full-length and a substantial darkening of their sound. Later albums, like the platinum-selling Sing the Sorrow and 2006's Decemberunderground, are ambitious, Goth-punk tours de force, combining pummeling rhythms, jarring guitar and tortured vocals with defiantly complex arrangements. Part of a growing prog-punk movement that includes Coheed and Cambria, Angels and Airwaves and Avenged Sevenfold, AFI is worshipped by a black-clad fanbase known as the "the Despair Faction," which has crowned them kings of the Warped Tour nation.

Bad Religion have the distinction of being the longest lasting Punk band from Los Angeles. For nearly twenty years now, they've upheld their tradition of thoughtful and intelligent lyrics (prompting some to call them "lexicon punks") and aggressive play. The chip on this band's shoulder might read "Perseverance Pays" -- despite self-releasing their debut How Could Hell be Any Worse? in 1980 on founding guitarist Brett Gurewitz's Epitaph label, it wasn't until 1988 when Suffer's (empowering anthem "You are (the Government)" taught more than a few young punks the meaning of "jurisprudence") that the band made a significant splash and settled in for the long haul with a somewhat steady lineup and musical vision. Since then, audiences have received a new earful of gruff-voiced singer Greg Graffin's rants set to frenetic power-chording on a yearly basis. A fine example of staying power gleaned from remaining true (with minor tweaks for maintenance) to an original sound and intent.

San Francisco's Dead Kennedys are arguably the most successful, well-respected American punk band of all time. Fronted by Jello Biafra, a political activist, spoken word artist and one-time San Francisco mayoral candidate, the Dead Kennedys combine astoundingly fast hardcore punk with Biafra's distinct, quavering vocals (the source of the nickname "Jello"). Strong adherents to Punk's D.I.Y. ethic, they formed their own record label, Alternative Tentacles, in 1981, to distribute their own as well as other, like-minded music. Although conservative audiences have objected to DK's highly politicized music and artistic decisions -- they were actually prosecuted for violating anti-obscenity laws with the poster insert to their 1985 Frankenchrist album (a move which resulted in Biafra's becoming one of the '80s most important proponents of free speech, although the emotional toll on the band resulted in their dissolution) -- the Dead Kennedys have nevertheless remained punk favorites. In the '90s and beyond, the band and Biafra began a bitter dispute over reunion efforts and the use of the DKs name. Bassist East Bay Ray launched a lawsuit against Biafra for royalty money; Biafra refused an offer to join a DKs reunion tour. The band continues to tour, minus Biafra and to his disdain, under the Dead Kennedys name.

Suicidal Tendencies emerged from Venice, Calif., in 1983, successfully melding thrash metal with the speedcore of punk. Embracing the "heavy" portion of metal without the tongue-in-cheek antics, the punk kids took notice of Suicidal Tendencies and no longer had to hide their metal collections from their friends. The band was cross-cultural and street smart, often incorporating aspects of gang culture with their skate punk roots. The group's self-titled first release was a frenetic one, super-charged by lead singer Mike Muir's political observations and offbeat humor. That album's single, "Institutionalized" -- with its fierce chorus and eminently quotable lyrics "All I wanted was a Pepsi / Just one Pepsi" -- had limited commercial success. Riding their wave of early success, Muir and a group of rotating band members continued a release schedule with results that we uneven at best. Join the Army (Caroline), was released in '87, a full four years after their debut, and equally embraced Motorhead and speedcore. Lights...Camera....Action, their first for Epic in '90, was a ferociously loud album with Muir once again conveying his political and social ideas, while '92s The Art of Rebellion was more mainstream and filled with standard rock cliches. Suicidal for Life found the band embracing some of its earlier ferocity in '94, not so much with the music as with the use of obscenities. Muir and band returned to the world of indies in '98, releasing Six the Hard Way on their own Suicidal Records.

Formed in 2004, this Sheffield, Yorkshire, England quintet took its name from a line in Pirates of the Caribbean and its sound from American hardcore and metal. Combining the elements of straight-edge hardcore, primitive '90s metalcore, and death metal, BMTH fused their own brand of crushing music that got the attention of the music industry. After releasing their debut album only in the U.K. in 2006, the band -- Oliver Sykes (vocals), Lee Malia (guitar), Curtis Ward (guitar), Matt Kean (bass), and Matt Nicholls (drums) -- was voted Best Newcomers by Kerrang! Magazine, and the media frenzy ensued. They quietly re- released the album in the United States a year later, but it wasn't until Epitaph Records released 2008's highly anticipated second full-length Suicide Season following their stint on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour that BMTH became a force in the States.

Black Flag have become one of the most enduring legacies of American Punk. The band's first two EP releases, Nervous Breakdown and Jealous Again, are paradigms of the original West Coast Hardcore sound: loud, fast, and abrasively unpolished. The group would undergo a number of lineup changes (including the departure of Keith Morris to form the equally legendary Circle Jerks), most notably the insertion of vocalist Henry Rollins, future spoken word artist/author/alterna-hero/Gap model. By the release of Damaged, their first full-length album, Rollins' influence was apparent -- the band had acquired an overt Heavy Metal sound rife with three-minute guitar solos and head-banging riffs. BF were astonishingly prolific -- producing up to three albums a year -- until their breakup in 1986, at which point founder Greg Ginn left to focus on running the notable Indie label SST.

C.O.C. started off as one of the best politico-punk acts the States had to offer. Eye for an Eye is indispensable to the history of American hardcore, as songs "Indifferent" and "Positive Outlook" largely determined how it was to be played -- rapid-fire vocals leaning into sudden squalls of mosh pit ferocity. The band's transformation from Punk progenitors to Metal innovators was already underfoot by the time they unleashed Animosity in 1984. After undergoing a radical line-up change, they re-emerged in 1991 with Blind, a record many of their punk followers couldn't hang with for being formally produced Metal. Poor them. Blind is a great album, and the single "Vote with a Bullet" is an explosive convergence of hard Sabbath riffs and politics. If anything, C.O.C.'s commitment to shaking up the status quo has only grown more intense and more intelligent despite their shift from Hardcore blitz to focused heavy metal.

Prepare to be attacked by a swarm of enraged screamos with a rapid-fire spray of metal machine gun guitars adding to their post-hardcore fury. Like similar aural pummeling from head-numbing artists like Sick of It All and Sparta, this LA band (who headed west from Gainesville, Florida) is very, very angry, and rather than punch a pillow, they released their debut CD Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count in 2004. Sure, it's a little threatening and not a bit subtle, but it's still a safe and therapeutic way to release adolescent anger without anyone getting hurt. Unless your eardrums burst.

Bad Brains have long been considered one of the most important bands in the formation of hardcore punk. Formed in Washington D.C. in 1977, the band stood out first because all the members were black, and secondly because they incorporated reggae into their music. On top of all this, their jazz and prog rock background allowed them to play with an unmatched technicality: Bad Brains played faster and tighter than anyone had ever heard a band play at the time. Powered by H.R.'s insidiously menacing vocals and guitarist Dr. Know's preternatural abilities, the band had an immediate effect on the burgeoning D.C. hardcore scene. Their first two albums had the same effect on the rest of the country. Amid near constant inner band strife, they broke up several times between 1984 and 1995, with H.R. leaving to concentrate on reggae and only returning sporadically to perform with his compatriots. Over the years, Bad Brains reunions and sudden unexpected appearances would occur now and again, always considered major event in the punk rock world. In 2006, the classic era lineup played three shows during the final days of CBGB. They also reentered the studio to record new material for the first time in 10 years -- the result was Build a Nation.

Way back in 1979, before everyone and your mother was playing punk rock, before frat boys were getting Black Flag bars tattooed on their forearms, before MTV and before Green Day, the Descendents were formed. The band gigged in L.A. for a bit, released a single, then temporarily disappeared. They reappeared in '81 with a new lead singer (Milo Auckerman), a new LP (Milo Goes to College), and a new, poppier sound, filled with self-effacing, goofy lyrics about girls, parents, and junk food. Auckerman then left the band to attend college -- hence the album title -- and drummer Bill Stevenson headed off to join Black Flag. The group disbanded until '85, when the original lineup reappeared for the I Don't Want to Grow Up LP, followed in '86 by Enjoy! Both albums laid the groundwork for future bands who would mimic their pop-punk playing style, and featured a host of classic Punk anthems, like "Pervert," "I Like Food" and "Sour Grapes."

Imitated by many, paralleled by none, Minor Threat was known for their furious passion with which they played. They blew up the D.C. scene, creating the mold for Hardcore punk around the world. MT raised the bar for punk rock with their fiery sound borne of a genuine burn: Fast and loud, but never at the expense of not playing their instruments properly. As the band grew, MT's sound slowed just a bit, allowing them to squeeze a few hooks between the crushing guitar riffs. Their message was as important, if not more so, than the music. Just as they were screaming the loudest, MT went supernova only four years after their inception. Sure, the members went on to different bands (Fugazi, Dag Nasty, Government Issue, the Meatmen), but none -- save for possibly Fugazi -- have come close to MT's impact.

Exploding into the hardcore scene in 2002, Canada's Alexisonfire (pronounced Alexis-on-fire) have been praised for their sweet/sour approach to writing music. With a bitter, rage-ridden style, Alexisonfire attack the hardcore genre with a talent and precision unmatched by their contemporaries. The screeching of George Logan's vocals sounds devilish alongside guitarist Dallas Green's soothing angelic harmonies, and together they create a mesmerizing sound.

After only one single with fellow Los Angeles punks Black Flag, singer Keith Morris left to form the Circle Jerks. Crude and unruly, the band played with middle fingers proudly outstretched and huge smirks smeared across their faces. First documented (and immortalized) in the 1980 film Decline of Western Civilization, their hyper-energetic live shows quickly became stuff of legend. Cram-packed with speedy skaters and jubilant misfits, a Circle Jerks show inspired the most stage diving of any band this side of Minor Threat, and made them one of the most beloved bands to come out of Los Angeles. They continued to release material on and off into the mid-1990s, the highlight being a guest appearance by Debbie Gibson on Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities (1995).

Bury Your Dead began as a side project in 2001 for guitarist Slim B and drummer Mark Castillo, who were both playing in a band called Hamartia. After some time, the metalcore sound began to lose its enchantment for the two friends, and they began writing songs on their own. Eventually they recruited Rich Casey (bass) and singer Joe Krewko and Bury Your Dead were officially born. The quartet toured and gained a reputation for their bruising live shows, they were signed Eulogy Records and released, You Had Me At Hello in March 2002. The guys borrowed a van and eagerly went on tour to support the release. Once the tour was over, however, the members went their separate ways. But within a year, their paths led back to one another and the band reformed. This time around, they added (singer) Mat Bruso and (guitarist) Eric Ellis to complete their sound. Voracious touring followed, including appearances at the highly regarded Metalfest and Hellfest -- which is where they were approached by Victory Records. The band's debut, Cover Your Tracks was released in late 2004 on the label, and was heralded as one of the most brutal hardcore releases to date. While touring in support of Cover Your Tracks, they kicked around the idea of releasing a live album. So in May 2005, producer Paul Minor recorded the band's show at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim, California, and laid the groundwork for the aptly-titled, Alive. Released just in time for the Ozzfest 2005, Alive gave fans a peek into Bury Your Dead's ferocious, deafening live sound.

During the mid-'80s, the big guns in the American Punk scene began turning their sights more and more towards metal in their desire to stretch their legs musically. One can see this transition at work in D.R.I.'s releases from '82 to '88. The seminal Dirty Rotten LP from 1983 was the gust of innovation that blew many a Punk band in the direction of Thrash, while later releases such as Four of a Kind found the band slowing things down a bit and working with longer, more complex song structures. From the get-go, their irreverent and wickedly funny songwriting earned them a wide following in the skatepunk scene. Since then, they have managed to expand their following to include dyed-in-the-wool metal-heads and a whole new generation of punks via their appearance on the "Social Chaos Tour" of 1999.

If the Meat Puppets were judged solely on the merits of their masterpiece achievement Meat Puppets II, they might be considered the greatest rock 'n' roll band of all time. Released at a time when country was still considered dumb hick music by the legions of underground rock enthusiasts immersed in the D.C. Hardcore scene -- and with Palace Brothers still a long way off -- the record is the Sweetheart of the Rodeo of its generation. Rooted in the weird landscapes of the southwestern desert they came from, the Meat Puppets's fractured country/punk songs offered a never-before encountered number of chops that were, on top of it all, psychedelic as hell. They released great records into the '90s -- ever honing their craft -- but for many of their early fans, their sound became a little over-honed as the looseness and throw-away attitude of their Punk origins gave way to rigid musicianship and a creeping Zappa feel. Still, the Meat Puppets stand as one of the great bands of the 1980s.

It's a testament to the importance and popularity of the Vandals that their cameo in the movie Suburbia happened not because they were scripted to appear, but because the film's cast voted them in. Also significant is the fact that a band founded in 1981 -- and not just any band, but a Punk band, no less -- continues to form a viable part of the output in the post-Post-Punk era. The Vandals' success rests on two identifiable reasons: their ability to laugh at almost anything without making themselves the butt of the joke, and their tireless touring, recording and fan recruiting. Along the way, they've moved from being mere pranksters in the Hardcore Punk world to VIPs.

No Use For A Name has become a hardcore institution since their inception in 1987. Since then, they've released nearly a dozen albums, most of which they've released as a part of the roster for the venerable Fat Wreck Chords label. For the most! part, it's pop- punk played so fast that if you blink, you might miss it. You can expect plenty of rapid- fire drumming and guitars that speed through each song but in more recent years, the group has picked up a more melodic side, even stepping outside the punk mold (in sound only).

Thwarted by circumstance, TSOL's earliest and most important recordings didn't see the light of day until the band had already changed directions artistically and ideologically. Formed in 1978, the True Sounds of Liberty's first EP contained some of the earliest examples of hardcore anarcho-punk on either side of the Atlantic. Songs like "Property is Theft" and "Abolish Government/Silent Majority" employed a vernacular critique of capitalism accessible even to the teenage skate punks who frequented their shows. By the time their first full-length Dance With Me hit the shelves, the band had picked up on the vapid horror-movie theatrics of L.A.'s Punk scene; swapping political fervor for Goth Metal camp, the band squandered whatever potential they had to sit in the empyrean of Punk's greats. Well into the '90s, their spiral from preeminence to irrelevance continued, much to their fans' dismay.

One of the best Punk bands, ever. That's not an exaggeration. Dillinger Four are fast and tough, but they lace their songs with deadly sharp wit and dangerously catchy melodies. They don't screw around with wanking guitar solos and they don't whine about their girlfriends or girls they wish they had, or girls they wish they hadn't had. In both their tight, blustery sound and in their socio-politically conscious outlook, they embody Punk. And they like beer. A lot. Not everybody who likes Punk will be into Dillinger Four; Johnny Vomit spare changing in front of the liquor store will dismiss them as being sell-outs for some concocted reason (and besides, they don't have any facial tattoos). Max Thrash, still wearing the bloodied shirt he got at his first D.R.I. show, will call them slow and boring because you can -- gasp! -- almost make out what they're saying. A recent album is titled D4 vs. God; in this battle, our money's on D4, the Twin City Bruisers.

Sick of It All and Shelter helped form the New York Hardcore sound from two different angles. From their experiences in those seminal hardcore bands, Sick of It All roadie Toby Morse and Shelter's Adam Blake shape a new, more melodic, but still blistering NY/HC style. With thick roots deep in the New York Hardcore scene, H2O are no slouches in their punk attack. A powerful, popping bassline picks up the pace on their already accelerated and incredibly catchy, sing-along Hardcore. Their songs recall the positive themes of the Straight-Edge scene in the '80s, but sidestep the preachy, holier-than-thou posturing.
Anyone who was into skateboarding in the 1980s remembers the unintentionally funny Skatevisions video for Vision and Sims skateboards. Agent Orange was omnipresent back then. They were the soundtrack for this video as well as for a generation of skate punks. The Orange County power-trio gave birth to a sound that blended Surf with Heavy Metal and Power Pop. The guitar lead for their Skate Punk anthem "Blood Stains" was even ripped off by The Offspring on the chart-topping "Come out and Play." Although they haven't released anything since 1996's Virtually Indestructible, Agent Orange continue to play the club circuit.

These spiky-haired U.K. Punk legends have returned to their guitar-led, biting, sneering, kicking, fighting early '80s sound that justified punks around the world painting the G.B.H. logo on their leather jackets.

Formed amid the OC hardcore scene in 1997, Throwdown is a straight-edge band that, because of the unhinged heaviness of their records (five so far) often gets tossed in with pure metal bands, although the band considers their music to be hardcore. Regardless of categorization, Throwdown has been a force in heavy music since their full-length debut in '98, for Indecision Records. Through lineup changes that have seen the band trade members several times with metalcore big shots Eighteen Visions, spots on the Ozzfest and Warped tours and in support of Swedish melody-metal band In Flames, Throwdown has remained true to their straight-edge ideals and apparent dedication to total sonic devastation.

Refused demand, "We want the airwaves back. We don't just want airtime. We want all the time, all of the time." Mixing the intensity of Minor Threat and the complexity of Fugazi, Refused take no prisoners in any confrontation. Like no Hardcore before, these Swedes perfectly blend styles from across the board -- Techno, jazz, pop, Metal -- into their distinct, ripping Hardcore sound. The vocals go from raw screaming to a smooth crooning with eerie precision. The music pushes boundaries explored by few bands; this is the Hardcore sound of tomorrow. While their music is so absolutely powerful -- an aural blitzkrieg that pounds you senseless -- their politics are every bit as strong. They've been nominated for Swedish Grammies, they've won Zeppelins (the Swedish MTV music awards), but they recently fell apart as a band, holding true to their anarchist principles over becoming music superstars.

From the moment of Oi!'s inception in its native England, it seemed so quintessentially British in nature that the very idea of it crossing the Atlantic and landing on American shores seemed a near impossibility. Nevertheless, Atlanta, Ga.'s Anti-Heros -- who were among the very first stateside bands to lead the Oi! brigade into battle -- offered boot-stomping, fist-flailing Oi! that bore a resemblance to their British antecedents' work, but also carried a heavy load of Hardcore tonnage along on its hell-for-leather ride. The chants and rants from soccer matches could still be heard in the choruses -- and lager was considered just as dear (and occasionally, worth fighting over) -- but the guitar blasts gained speed and the music moved more recklessly than the Oi! bred abroad. The spawn may have differed heavily from the music that sired it, but it struck a chord with skins and punks all over, making their first aggro-filled, beer-soaked, muscle-flexing album That's Right/Don't Tread On Me an inimitable Oi! classic.
